Letter from the Board:
June 2008
Chancery Park Homeowners,
In recent months some of our residents have expressed concern over the increased traffic, parking by non-residents, and speeding by cut-through traffic. Some reasons for the increase in neighborhood traffic are due to:
- A reduction of parking spaces at George Mason University (GMU).
- Increased traffic volume on University causing drivers to cut through our neighborhood as a convenient by-pass to the traffic light at the University/123 intersection.
- Increased interest in GMU campus and sports events for which there is a shortage of convenient parking leading to increased parking in our neighborhood, at times blocking driveways and access to our mailboxes.
In addition, the increase in traffic has raised safety and security issues:
- Many motorists passing through our neighborhood do not stop at the stop signs and drive well above the speed limit, endangering residents and especially children.
- In some instances, motorist case the neighborhood which has resulted in a number of property thefts.
GMU sponsors periodic community outreach meetings to discuss future development and impact to the adjacent neighborhoods. GMU announced a major campus expansion doubling the number of students residing on campus within the next few years. As a result, we expect to see traffic volume increase in our community. Some of the expansion plans are:
- GMU building a new seven story hotel between University Drive and 123. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer.
- New dormitories to support the expanding on campus student body. Construction is scheduled to beginning this fall.
- Elimination of student parking adjacent to 123, directing parking to the field house parking area and the adjacent street.
- New guest and faculty housing directly across from our community.
- New research facility adjacent to our community, directly across the intramural fields.
- An increase of the number and frequency of sporting events on the fields adjacent to University Drive and School Street.
In an attempt to explore alternatives available to our community in dealing with these traffic issues, members of the board met with City officials. Possible options discussed were:
- Installing signs indicating children playing and asking drivers to use caution.
- Gating the community in the same manner as Faircroft.
- Installing speed bumps.
- Closing the entry to Chancery Park Drive from University Drive and turning our community into a dead end.
We are currently waiting for the City’s formal proposals at which time we plan to share them with the community.
We welcome your questions and suggestions. To contact us, please visit our community web-site.
